"If I had known I would get into such gridlock I would have taken a different route!"  MyTraffic, developed by BAY-IKTI, is the tool which allows you to know of traffic jams before getting there! Using MyTraffic the changing traffic situation can be followed in real-time. Installation is possible on any PDA or mobile phone with GPS capabilities and internet access. The program displays a scalable map of Budapest with the current location centred. Roads are marked on either side, with respect to direction, using the following six colours: 
If a road section is not marked by a colour, then traffic information is not currently available for that section. How does the information get onto the phone? Using the internet connection of the phone the program constantly downloads updates. Thus the traffic situation displayed is always up-to-date. According to tests 3G/HSDPA dataconnections are optimal. EDGE connections are also sufficient, but few seconds of delay may occur with such conditions. GPRS only connections (usually available on older mobilephones) are not recommended, due to extreme slowness. The daily use of MyTraffic generates about 0.1 GB of traffic per month, therefore an internet package with at least that data quota is recommended. How does the server know the current traffic situation? Drivers using MyTraffic are themselves the source of the information! As one drives in the city the program sends the current GPS coordinates to the server at preset intervals. On the server side, users' movement data and information from other sources are combined and fed through intelligent algorithms to determine the traffic situation. Only anonymous GPS data is used by the system, no personal details are collected. As the amount of people using MyTraffic increases, the available preciseness and completeness of Budapest's traffic situation increases also. What if I'm the only one using MyTraffic at the moment? At certain times, of course, it is possible that very few MyTraffic users are travelling within the city. To assure coverage even at these times we have several fleet management companies as partners, whose thousands of vehicles provide a "base fleet" for MyTraffic. How fresh is the data? The traffic map provided by MyTraffic is always based on the previous 30 minutes’ GPS data. Therefore listening to radio traffic reports is not necessary; yet deciding on a route can be done using the most up-to-date information! What is the cost? Download and use of the program is free. But because the use of MyTraffic generates datacommunication over the internet, your mobile operator may bill you for that datatraffic. Therefore an internet package with at least an 0.5 GB data quota is recommended. Can I try MyTraffic without a compatible mobile, PDA or mobile internet subscription? Absolutely!
